Assistant Scoutmasters Dr Bob Knox and Kathi Jo Zornes were also with teh Troop. By JEFF BARRON PDT Staff Writer "It's been lot of fun," she said. "I've just been having a good time. There are more people in it than I expected. And there's a bigger crowd watching than I expected." The Wheelersburg resident was decked out in green Cat-in-the-Hat headgear while watching the parade near the Roy Rogers Esplanade. The parade featured floats, bands, the Knights of Columbus and solicitor David Kuhn riding a mule among the 40 or so units that participated. Both Kuhn and the mule were dressed in their Irish best. Several hundred people lined the parade route as the parade made its way from the Scioto County Welcome Center in Boneyfiddle to the esplanade. Stillwell said people in the city have always celebrated St. Pat's Day, just not formally. Also adorned in an Irish hat was city resident Tyler Anderson, who also gave the parade good reviews. "What can you say?" he said. "They threw out candy for kids." People on several floats did indeed toss out candy to children along the parade route. Anderson had two reasons for attending the parade. "I'm Irish and it's right outside the bar," he said. "It was the perfect opportunity to come and see a parade in Portsmouth." Anderson and Jesse Brown were standing across from the Port City Pub, which was packed with revelers after the parade ended around 3:30 p.m. "I think it's a great way for a small community to come together," Brown said. "It was very small-towny and made me feel good about the town I'm in. I had a great time." Bill McClurg was a parade staffer and also took photos as the parade proceeded. He said the units organized quickly in the welcome center parking lot and got off to a smooth start. Portsmouth resident Paula Bauer braved the cold weather and was looking forward to next year. "For the first parade, it was nice," she said. "Cold, but nice. I hope they continue it. I hope they continue it next year, and maybe it will be bigger and better"\ Jerry O'Bannion and John Hogan of the 7 Nations Celtic Club helped organize the parade. O'Bannion said the club wants to make the parade an annual tradition like the River Days Festival. JEFF BARRON can be reached at (740) 353-3101, ext. 236. Copyright © 2007 The Portsmouth Daily Times
