Preparing youth to lead
Adult training information can be found here. Every Youth deserves a Trained Leader.
Youth Leadership Training Continuum This supplemental training module is designed
for Scout leaders and parents who want to understand the youth leadership training
continuum. It addresses the content of the three levels of the youth leadership
training continuum, what the boys learn from each, and how adults can help ensure
that youths have every opportunity to become truly great leaders.
For a Youth-Led Troop. We suggest these four phases of training:
Troop Leadership Training Cycle
- TLT - Troop Leadership Training - Conducted at the TROOP by the Scoutmaster
- YLT - A supplemental District course, such as Silver Bars, where the troop attends a weekend campout using a similar syllabus as TLT. Thge advabtage is that the Scout gets to apply what he learns during a campout
- NYLT - A Council level course, such as Nagatamen and Eagle Feather, where the scout attends an intensive week-long course. This is the highest level of local Youth Leadership Training
- NAYLE - National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience, conducted at Philmont
Phase I. Troop Leadership Training.
Here are some resources that can be customized to your troop.
TLT PowerPoint presentation and talking points
Leading The Way - a large file that outlines every Position Of Responsibility.
This is not a BSA document. It is the end result of research from units that have made this work. Each position notes a
required attendance and performance standard. While there are NO RULES about attendance in any BSA literature,
it is widely recognized that you cannot peform if you do not attend.
Position Of Responsibility tracking form.
Much like a "blue card" track progress towards a Merit Badge, this form sets the Youth Leader's goals and vision and tracks his progress. A Mid-term Board Of Review checks his needs and challenges. To recieve crediot for teh six month POR, teh Scout finally meets with the Scoutmaster and BOR for a review of how he did.
