The Fredericksburg Free Lance Star WHAT IS A JAMBOREE? "The Language of Scouting" defines a jamboree as a term chosen by Baden-Powell to describe the first international gathering of Scouts camping together in London in 1920. The term is restricted to indicate a national or world jamboree. The BSA has a national jamboree every four years. The 2005 national jamboree ("jambo" for short, is a Swahili greeting, meaning "hello" or "greetings") is a 10 day event in which BSA transforms approximately 3,000 acres of land on a U.S. Army base in Virginia to support a city of more than 40,000 Scouts and leaders. We have our own bus and telephone system, post offices, first-aid stations and hospital, police and fire departments, radio stations, daily newspaper, food distribution, sanitation and trading posts. During jambo, a wide variety of activities will be offered to satisfy almost any Scouting interest. ![]() ![]() ![]() A National Jamboree Scrapbook - the Jamboree Life E-mail for more information Copyright © 2007 ...
